Level Up

Level 1 Uncommon (Support)

Provides a buff to a target Card in the user’s deck, raising that Card a full Rank. Lasts 20 minutes for Common Cards, 15 for Uncommon, 10 for Rare. 3 hour refresh.

Restriction: can not be used in conjunction with similar Cards to double up the effect.

Mira turned to Dax. “This one’s for you,” she said.

Dax nodded. Being just as careful to avoid the still-growing Vines as Mira, Dax leaned forward and gripped the Card between his thumb and two fingers.

It seemed there was some resistance. Like it didn’t want to let Kragen go. Or maybe it was the other way around.

“Let it go,” Dax commanded.

Kragen grumbled again, but the bond between him and the Card seemed to weaken. Dax was able to step back, his new Card in hand.

Once again, he felt like grinning, but for the sake of their captive, he kept his stern expression in place.

“Now the other one,” Mira said, her voice hard and flat.

“You can’t be serious,” Kragen said. “I need that Card! Without it, I’m nothing but a crippled old man!”

“You should have thought of that before you sent your Faction after me,” Mira said. “Hand it over. Do it now.”

The defeated Card fighter grumbled under his breath once again. But he did as Mira demanded. Her tone gave him no other option.

The second Card appeared, just like the first, tendrils of Card magic connecting it to Kragen. As Dax had done, Mira took it and stepped away, severing the Card magic connection.

As soon as the last tendril faded, Kragen’s Stone Golem ability went with it. He quickly shrank back down to become the twisted wreck of a man he had been before. Once again, the Vines reacted instantly, growing tighter, keeping the man firmly bound.

Finally, Dax allowed himself to smile. He now had two Cards. His own Card and a support Card. And that might just have been enough to make him a match for Rorke.

Mira had a second Card as well. Dax didn’t even question that it was hers by right.

Dax was thinking that they might be able to leave the former Card fighter alive. He’d kept his face hidden. The man didn’t know who he was, and he already knew that Mira had a Card.

But the man didn’t seem to know when to keep his mouth shut.

He started to swear once again, interspersing his cursing with threats.

“You’ll pay for this!” he growled, his voice almost as gravelly as it had been when he was the Stone Golem. “Mark me! My brothers will find you! Doesn’t matter where you go, or how long it takes. I know who you are, Mira Valen! There will be no escape!”

At this, Dax stiffened. Nor was he the only one. Mira glanced at Torald, who nodded and stepped forward. He had his blade in his hand.

“I’ve got this,” he said, and his meaning was clear.

“No!” Jynn said.

Clearly, the gambler wasn’t as ready to accept the man’s death as he’d thought.

Torald hesitated, whether because of Jynn’s outburst or because he was uncertain about the still-growing Vines, Dax didn’t know.
